2022 Review: WPC+

Updated: Jun 4, 2023

Many of you may be wondering, what is WPC+?

In the off-season post COVID, I was doing some work getting ready for the upcoming season and was becoming increasingly frustrated there was no real way to compare plays of a same positions from different schools and conferences.

In baseball, the universal WAR or wRC or many of the other metrics allow for an easy comparison team to team, position to position.

So that is what I built. It allows us to take a look at the best performers, utilizing PPA, a stat from www.collegefootballdata.com that is essentially total win value added per play.

I take that, regress it so that it we can compare players with maybe less opportunities, correct it for strength of schedule, and there we have it.

I published a deeper dive from July of 2021 here.

The average college football player at the position is at 100, similar to wRC, so if you're ranked 130, you are 30% better than the average.
